Do you want to escape the crowds and discover some of the lesser-known tourist destinations in Belgium? We have compiled a list of great spots for a relaxing day out.

Whether you have visited these places before or have heard of them but never got around to going, you will be amazed by the hidden treasures that Belgium has to offer.

The enchanting Lommel Sahara

A quiet nature reserve in Lommel, where you will find miles of fantastic landscapes and few tourists. White sand and green vegetation alternate with the water of the crystal blue lake. Large sandy plains resemble the vastness of the Sahara, from which this spectacular destination derives its name. There are many walking and cycling paths to follow, and if you are brave enough, you can even take a dip in the refreshing water of the lake!

The Japanese garden of Hasselt, an oasis of tranquility

Do you feel like escaping the hustle and taking time for reflection? You will find peace and calm in the Japanese garden of Hasselt. The city of Hasselt, located an hour and a half from Liège, is home to the largest Japanese garden in Europe. Stunning colors, impressive plants, and soothing waterfalls combine to create a truly serene Japanese garden where you can relax.

The beauty of the Ardennes

An unspoiled piece of nature in the southeast of Belgium, where you can discover the history of Belgium and spend time outdoors. This enchanting region has much to offer. You can take the children for a walk in the dense forests, go cross-country skiing in winter, taste the famous Ardennes pâté with a Belgian beer with friends, and visit the historical monasteries and castles scattered in the hills and valleys.

The university city of Leuven

Just outside Brussels lies Leuven, full of sights and not too many tourists. This university city is ideal if you want to discover the ‘real’ Belgium with friends. The extensive beer culture (is this related to the number of students in this city?) is due to the world-famous brand Stella Artois being brewed in Leuven. Save a brewery tour for last and start by visiting the sights. Some monuments to see are the fantastic university library, the bizarre totem (an ornate beetle on a pole), the Grote Markt, and the Gothic St. Peter’s Church.

Picturesque and charming Damme

Damme is a hidden treasure just 6 km from Bruges but not yet discovered by tourists. If you want a quiet day, Damme is the place to explore. A walk along the tree-lined canal (built to protect the city) or browsing in one of the many bookstores will surely whet your appetite for a Belgian lunch in one of the many restaurants. Or simply sit on a terrace and watch the world go by while enjoying a Belgian hot chocolate.

Gravensteen Castle

Keep your children entertained with stories of torture and mystery at the magical Gravensteen Castle in Ghent (1 hour from Brussels). If you love macabre stories, this fairytale castle has plenty. With torture chambers, dark dungeons, and imposing towers, Gravensteen has a remarkable atmosphere that gives you a glimpse into the atrocities that took place here in the past.

The fascinating caves of Remouchamps

Do your children love mystery and adventure? Then an underground boat trip in the caves of Remouchamps, near Liège, is a perfect day out. You start with a 1 km walk through the caves to the large ‘cathedral’, where you go deep into the earth where people lived 1,000 years ago. Use your imagination to see how hunters could survive in this cold and damp environment. The last part of this trip takes you on the world’s longest underground river, the 700-meter Rubicon, with breathtaking landscapes and a natural water fountain.

Experience surrealism in Klankenbos

Do you want a completely different experience for your children? Then they will be entertained for hours in Klankenbos. The open-air museum contains a series of unique artworks that produce light and sound. This fascinating attraction offers many other sound-related activities for all ages, including a musical treasure hunt, games in the forest, a concert of branches and twigs, and tours specially designed for families.
