Germany is home to many famous philosophers, impressive castles, beautiful top models, and majestic forests. If you decide to take a road trip through Germany, you can also look forward to a culinary adventure. Read our travel guide to taste the best currywurst and forget about all vegetables – except potatoes.

Interesting facts and figures about sausages

Did you know that there are over 1,500 types of sausages in Germany? For example, there are bockwurst, blood sausage, bratwurst, white sausage, and the highlight: currywurst. According to legend, currywurst was invented after World War II by Herta Heuwer, when she mixed ketchup, a dash of Worcestershire sauce, and curry powder and served it over fries. Today, 70 million currywursts are eaten in Germany’s capital, and an incredible 800 million across the country. So follow the currywurst trail and forget your good dietary resolutions!

Stick to the classic for your very first currywurst

Your first currywurst tasting experience should take place in the city where it was invented – Berlin. You can enjoy it at standing tables of numerous street food stalls. If you prefer to sit, Konnopke’s Imbiß, the oldest snack bar in the city, offers a nice terrace with chairs. Their crispy currywurst is served in a rectangular cardboard tray, and you can even choose between different “spice levels” for the sauce. The service is quick, the meals are affordable, and if you’re with non-German-speaking companions, there are even menus in English. You can then leave Prenzlauer Berg with a full stomach, visit the flea market at Mauerpark, explore the unconventional neighborhood full of bars, and turn night into day at Berghain, the famous techno club. However, you should not continue your journey without stopping at the German Currywurst Museum, dedicated to the legendary dish.

For your vegan friends who love soul food

Head to Dresden. The city is a hidden gem, worth visiting for its architecture alone. Be sure to stroll through the old town, the historic center, and the Royal Palace. You can also get some fresh air along the banks of the Elbe or admire the impressive panorama of the Elbe Sandstone Mountains. End your walk by returning to the city and stopping by Curry & Co, a snack bar that offers a delicious currywurst and tables with holes where the funnel-shaped bags of fries fit perfectly. And for those of you who prefer to avoid meat, you can try the smoked vegan sausage. But beware: the spicy sauce is so hot it will bring tears to your eyes. You’ve been warned!

A fast-food treat before (or after) a night out

It’s time to explore Bochum, a city about 50 km from Düsseldorf. Start your evening at the butcher shop Dönninghaus, the perfect place to prepare your taste buds for the night. The sausage here is iconic and considered the best in the Ruhr area. Together with an addictive homemade sauce, which can be quite spicy, this delicious currywurst with fries and mayonnaise costs only 4 €. Relax the next day in Bochum and enjoy an educational and cultural outing. You shouldn’t miss the Zeiss Planetarium, the private brewery Moritz Fiege, or the local art museum Bochum.

If you want to mingle with the locals

Visit Witten, near Dortmund and just a 15-minute drive from Bochum, to the locals’ favorite spot, Eddi’s Durst und Wurst. Here, Eddi and his son serve their delicious currywurst on a plastic plate. You can expect a generous portion of mayonnaise and a homemade sauce on the fries, which some claim is the best in the world. And if that’s not enough, head south to the Berger Monument. This place and its fantastic view of the Ruhr are unbeatable. However, if you prefer shopping to nature, treat yourself to a shopping spree at the Ruhr Park shopping center to find the sweater of your dreams.
