The city of Lyon offers such a variety of activities that there are far more than 10 reasons to visit. However, we will look at the places that are, in my opinion, the 10 must-sees.

Whether you are passionate about art, history, architecture, or simply romantic walks, Lyon is a city that will meet your expectations. If you stay in Lyon for more than a weekend, don’t hesitate to rent a car to go further. The hidden treasures of the Rhône department hold many surprises for you.

1- Well-preserved historical districts

Explore the old Lyon during a walk in this Renaissance district. You can join the two-hour tours organized by the city of Lyon and let yourself be guided. You can also familiarize yourself with these places on your own during a walk that will transport you back in time. Lyon is a timeless city that will take you from one century to another at every street corner.

2- The Gallo-Roman theater

If time travel attracts you but the Middle Ages is not your favorite period and you prefer Antiquity, you will have the opportunity to visit the ancient theater of Fourvière. Indeed, this theater dates back to 15 BC. However, it is very well preserved for its age.

3- The omnipresence of art

Lyon is a city where art is everywhere. During your walks, it will not be uncommon to come across artworks, painted walls, or sculptures. This presence is particularly well represented by two predominant places: the Lumière Institute, which offers an overview of the history of cinematography, and the Museum of Fine Arts, which is one of the largest museums in Europe with 70 rooms. If you like light shows, there is notably the Festival of Lights which starts on December 6th.

4- The visit to the Basilica of Fourvière

The highest point of the city of Lyon, this basilica was built in the 19th century. This mystical place will surprise you with its atypical architecture and its riches. Indeed, you will find many decorations and multiple materials. Take the opportunity to admire the breathtaking view from the top of the Fourvière hill.

5- The banks of the Rhône

The banks of the Rhône are magnificent, and the city of Lyon has managed to highlight them. You can admire them by walking or cycling. If you are fond of originality and unusual experiences, know that the city also organizes expeditions on segways and tricycles. Finally, if staying on the banks does not satisfy you, Lyon also organizes boat trips.

6- The Traboules of Croix-Rousse

The word “traboule” means “to pass through.” It is used here to represent the weaving of passages on the slopes of Croix-Rousse. This architecture was widely used by the resistance during the Second World War. Like the city of Lyon, it is a district rich in history and very pleasant to look at.

7- Lyon Aquarium

Let yourself be surprised by this incredible aquarium. Take a world tour through the waters: visit Europe with temperate freshwater tanks but also America and Africa through tropical freshwater tanks. You will be transported by the experience provided by the touch pool and the tropical storm simulation, and you will shiver with the shark pit.

8- The Parc de la Tête d’Or and its lake

Come and discover one of the largest urban parks in France with its 105 hectares, including 17 hectares of lake. Its rose garden, botanical garden, and African plain, where among others lions and antelopes roam freely over 3 hectares, are just some of the reasons to visit the magnificent gardens of the Parc de la Tête d’Or.

9- The Beaujolais wine tourism circuits

The Rhône is famous for the beauty of its landscapes but also for the flavors of its wine. If you have the time, don’t forget to travel a few kilometers and enjoy the Beaujolais wine tourism circuits. Not to mention that there are only a few days left before the arrival of the new Beaujolais, it’s the perfect time!

10- Guided tour of Oingt

About thirty kilometers from Lyon, Oingt is one of the most beautiful villages in France. This town has preserved the ancient chapel of its medieval castle, its fortified gate of Nizy, and a tower of the keep. If, like me, you are passionate about the Middle Ages or simply if you like beautiful things, climb to the top of the tower and enjoy the panorama over the Azergues valley.

Staying in Lyon will allow you to educate yourself while enjoying the calm and beauty of the city.
