The Algarve is a beautiful Portuguese region that is definitely worth a visit. The authentic towns and villages along the coast, the cultural richness resulting from various dominations, the varied local gastronomy, the architectural heritage, and the hospitality of the inhabitants ensure an unforgettable stay. If you want to travel along the coast at your own pace, a car is still the most suitable means of transport. The roads are in excellent condition, and the coastal landscape makes the journey a true moment of pure happiness. So plan a road trip to the south of Portugal now, from Faro to Aljezur, via Tavira, Albufeira, Silves, and Sagres.

Faro, the capital of the Algarve.

Faro, with its breathtaking architectural beauty, is located in the far south of the country. The old town is surrounded by a fortified Roman wall and is ideal for a walk. Stroll through the small streets and visit the various attractions of the city. Be sure to visit the Roman forum, the episcopal palace, the many theaters, and the archaeological museum housed in an old monastery from the 16th century. During your walk, you can enjoy a local dish in one of the many restaurants. Try a cataplana, a delicious dish typical of the region, based on seafood. Faro is also known for its beautiful golf courses and its wide sandy beach located on an island.

Tavira and its birds.

Just outside Faro, you can admire the many wild birds that reside in the Ria Formosa national park. You understand that, to visit the region and discover the “real Portugal,” it is necessary to travel, and the car is ideal for that, especially given the large number of beautiful places. And what a pleasure it is to drive along the stunning Mediterranean coast on the way to Tavira. This small, charming town with 25,000 inhabitants is definitely worth a visit. You will quickly recognize the different periods that this historic city has experienced, particularly the Roman and Moorish times. Tavira is a quiet town. The small fishing port and the modern market are adjacent to neighborhoods with their glorious historical past. As you walk through the maze of small streets, you will see a Roman bridge, historical parks, and churches from different eras. Rest on one of the leafy squares and taste the delights of the region.

Sagres, Albufeira, Silves… authentic towns

On the way to Sagres, you can make a detour to Albufeira. This regional seaside resort has stunning beaches that are almost pristine. You will find beautiful coves with tempting, crystal-clear turquoise water. With a bit of luck, you might even see a dolphin! Then you drive further west to Silves. Its castle, one of the best-preserved in the region, is one of the attractions you can visit. Silves, an old Phoenician trading post and later the capital of the small Islamic kingdom of the Algarve, is now a small, isolated, and withdrawn town, far from the hustle and bustle of the seaside resorts. Enjoy the tranquility and taste one of the many local sweets such as Dom Rodrigos or Colchão de Noiva. You can also experience the hospitality and friendliness of the inhabitants. During your journey, you will see the many almond, fig, and olive groves that the land is rich in.

Aljezur and its treasures

Your journey ends in the authentic small town of Aljezur. This village is located inland, on the edge of the Vicentine nature park, and will amaze you with its Moorish architecture, its white houses, and small streets. This village between land and sea has a breathtaking view of the sea, but also of the countryside and fields in the region, which you should not miss. A delightful refuge. However, you have to work for it. To reach this small village with 5,000 souls, you have to drive along winding roads between pine and eucalyptus trees. A pure treat for the eyes and the nose. Also, make a detour to the adjacent beaches. Surrounded by spectacular black rock walls, these are places that are very popular with surfers. Moreover, the many colors of the dunes and the lush vegetation will enchant you, so that you finally fall completely in love with this beautiful region of the Algarve.
