The story beyond the mountains

Did you know that the Peneda-Gerês National Park is considered a World Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO and is the only protected area in Portugal classified as a National Park?

Spanning the districts of Braga, Viana do Castelo, and Vila Real, with an area of over 60,000 hectares and a rich historical and cultural heritage, there are various activities that allow for a true symbiosis and harmony between humans and nature. Special emphasis is given to the roe deer, as it is the symbol of the Park, and also to the Iberian wolf. It is here that the genuine values and traditions of ancient villages are preserved. Pitões das Júnias and Tourém are examples of this. Are you ready to discover them?

Plan your route in the Park well, regardless of the season or time of year you intend to visit, and let yourself be surprised by the natural beauty emanating from the river and streams, waterfalls, mountains, plateaus, and deep valleys, which are true picture postcards. So, why not start with the stunning landscapes and scenery?

Some viewpoints, although well-known, still deserve a special visit! Explore the Miradouro da Pedra Bela and the Miradouro da Boneca, both located in Terras de Bouro, or the Miradouro do Fafião in Cabril, Montalegre, with an impressive view.

The past and idyllic settings

And the waterfalls? They offer us absolutely enchanting and seductive views, inviting long stays to fully enjoy the best that nature has to offer.

The Cascata da Portela do Homem is less than 1 km from the border with Spain and is one of the most praised in the region. Do not be intimidated by the steep, narrow, and irregular trails that exist there. Who wouldn’t want to take a dip in these crystal-clear waters? They are worth the trip! You will not be disappointed or regret the journey initially made!

Another well-known one is the Cascata do Tahiti, have you heard of it? Also known as Cascata Fecha de Barjas, located in Ermida, it is possible to reach the site on foot, by motorcycle, or in an off-road vehicle. The landscape will not disappoint, and the swims will certainly make up for the initial challenge!

However, if nature is a testament to the quality and virtue of the region, the historical component of which the historical villages are a part is absolutely unforgettable! These are places that resist the evolution and modernization of associated time and preserve their authenticity. Do not be surprised, therefore, if you find the locals cooking over an open fire or kneading bread. Are you curious yet? We mentioned Pitões das Júnias above. Well, this is one of the most picturesque villages located in the municipality of Montalegre. Also visit Soajo, in Arcos de Valdevez, a village that offers you an absolutely extraordinary, natural, unique setting, and finally, take a leap to the submerged village of Vilarinho das Furnas. Hidden under the waters of the Rio Homem, it is only visible when the water levels drop significantly.

Activities not to miss

But we don’t stop here! The Park offers an extraordinary diversity of activities and experiences to enjoy in Peneda-Gerês. Do you like ecological or cultural tours? It’s possible! Do you prefer off-road tours, kayaking, or canyoning? You’re in the right place! Finally, hiking promises to truly connect you to nature and the purest it has to offer. There are various trails or walking routes to explore, with equally diverse lengths and levels of difficulty. Nonetheless, regardless of the way you choose to explore the region, you will get to know the essence and specificities of each area.

Appreciate and enjoy the most genuine offerings the Park has for you. Test your adventurous spirit! There are kilometers and kilometers of contact with nature! There are countless possibilities, experiences, the space is rich in history, so you cannot miss the opportunity to discover one of the most beautiful and magical places in Portugal.
