The Algarve is a splendid Portuguese region to explore. Its authentic seaside towns and villages, cultural richness from various colonizations, diverse local gastronomy, architectural heritage, and the hospitality of its inhabitants make it a must-visit destination. To travel along the coast and enjoy maximum autonomy, the car remains the preferred mode of transportation. The roads are in excellent condition, and the coastal landscapes make the journey a true delight. Plan a trip to the south of Portugal, from Faro to Aljezur, passing through Tavira, Albufeira, Silves, and Sagres.

Faro, capital of the Algarve

Located at the extreme south of the country, Faro boasts breathtaking architectural beauty. Its old town, surrounded by a fortified Roman wall, is perfect for strolling. Wander through the cobbled streets and visit the various sites of the city. Don’t miss the Roman forum, the episcopal palace, its many theaters, or the archaeological museum housed in a former 16th-century convent. During your walk, stop by one of the many restaurants and taste some local dishes. Let your taste buds savor a cataplana, an excellent typical dish of the region made with seafood. Faro is also renowned for its superb golf courses and its vast sandy beach located on an island.

Tavira and its birds

Just outside Faro, take the time to admire the many wild birds hosted in the Ria Formosa National Park. As you can see, to visit the region and discover the “real Portugal,” some travel is necessary, and the car is ideal given the numerous destinations. And what a pleasure it is to drive along the magnificent Mediterranean coasts to reach Tavira. This small town of 25,000 inhabitants will charm you with its allure. A historic town, you will easily notice the different eras it has gone through, notably Roman and Moorish. Tavira is a peaceful town. Its small fishing port and modern market juxtapose with neighborhoods of glorious historical past. Thus, around a maze of cobbled streets, you will find a Roman bridge, historical gardens, and churches from different eras. Enjoy one of the many shaded squares to taste some of the excellent fruits of the region.

Sagres, Albufeira, Silves… authentic towns

On your way to Sagres, make a stop in Albufeira. A seaside resort in the region, the beaches are magnificent, with some almost untouched. You will find splendid bays and striking turquoise and crystalline water. With a bit of luck, you might even encounter a dolphin! Then head west to Silves. Its castle, one of the best-preserved in the region, is a must-visit site. Once a Phoenician trading base and then the capital of the small Muslim kingdom of Algarve, Silves is a small, isolated town, far from the hustle and bustle of seaside resorts. Enjoy the calm to taste one of the many local sweets like Dom Rodrigos or Colchão de Noiva. You will also discover the hospitality and warmth of its inhabitants. Throughout your journey, you will notice the many almond, fig, and olive trees, of which the country is a major producer.

Aljezur and its treasures

End your journey with the authentic small village of Aljezur. Located inland, on the edge of the Vicentine Natural Park, you will be amazed by its Moorish architecture, white houses, and small streets. A true favorite, this village between land and sea offers a breathtaking view of the ocean, as well as the countryside and fields of the region. A true haven of peace. However, the destination must be earned. To reach this small village of 5,000 souls, you will have to drive through winding roads lined with pines and eucalyptus. A real treat for your eyes and nose. Don’t miss a trip to the nearby beaches. Bordered by spectacular black rock cliffs, they are very popular spots for surfers. Moreover, the many colors of the dunes and lush vegetation will amaze you and eventually make you fall completely in love with this splendid region of the Algarve.
