Is Portugal in fashion? Yes, but there are still secrets to discover in Portugal

In the “History” category – Buçaco
A well-kept secret in Aveiro: the Mata Nacional do Buçaco.
Located in the mountain range of the same name, the Mata do Buçaco is considered one of the richest in natural, architectural, and cultural heritage, and houses a true natural treasure. It covers more than 100 hectares, home to protected animal species and over 200 species of trees and shrubs. If you are looking for group or family programs, it is possible. You can organize events, practice peddy paper, artificial climbing, or bike rides.
Looking for something more romantic? With so much mysticism surrounding it, the palace – converted into a hotel – built between the 19th and 20th centuries, becomes a romantic space to relax and spend a weekend for two. Also enjoy the Termas do Luso, with a medical center and a spa, a place of tranquility and rest, surrounded by the unique beauty of the Serra do Buçaco.
In the “River Beach” category – Cabril do Ceira
Cabril do Ceira is a must-stop if you appreciate the genuine silence of nature! Have you heard of the Garganta do Cabril do Ceira? Few know it, but those who visit consider it one of the most beautiful places in Portugal. Located in Serpins, a village in Lousã, this true treasure is actually the result of an adaptation phenomenon of a structure that culminates in a gorge-shaped valley.
With friends, as a couple, or with family, it is possible – and highly recommended! – to take a dip in the river beach, whose crystal-clear waters reflect the surroundings. Take the opportunity and don’t miss the chance to visit and get to know the municipality of Góis.
In the “Historic Villages” category – Monsanto
You may not have heard of Monsanto, but this village lives up to the designation of “historic village” as its origin dates back to the Stone Age! What is so special about it? Well, Monsanto was built among huge rocks! It also has a castle built by the Templars, from where you can enjoy one of the most beautiful views in the region. The unique houses, set on colossal rocks, were built in granite stone with red roofs, and in this way, man and nature have coexisted for years in perfect symbiosis.
Looking for activities to liven up your stay? Don’t worry, as there will be no shortage of options. There are hiking trails, the Festa da Divina Santa Cruz, and during the hottest period, take your family to the River Beaches of Penha Garcia (also known as Praia Fluvial do Pego) or the Barragem Marechal Carmona.
In the “Landscapes” category – Portas de Ródão
You won’t find a majestic setting like the Portas de Ródão, located in the district of Castelo Branco. It is a Natural Monument, resulting from a tectonic fault and the erosion of the Tejo River on the rocks of the Serra das Talhadas, resembling two “doors”.
But the place also deserves to be visited for its diversity of fauna, flora, and birdlife. So, what to do? Explore this privileged area for observing dozens of bird species, some endangered and others rare, such as the red kite, the Bonelli’s eagle, or the Eurasian eagle-owl, or visit the Complexo de Arte Rupestre do Vale do Tejo. On the riverbanks, prehistoric remains of national interest were discovered.
In the “Nature” category – Pulo do Lobo
Are the secrets over? Not even close! We head south of Portugal towards Mértola, and follow the directions that lead us to Pulo do Lobo, a hidden secret in the Parque Natural do Vale do Guadiana, an area where smuggling legends between Portugal and Spain prevail. The route can be done in two ways: east or west. With a waterfall over 15m high, the scenery is indeed extraordinary.
If you are a hiking enthusiast, the Vale do Guadiana offers a wide variety of trails to explore on foot, but if you are looking for a bit of history, visit the Museum of Archaeology of Mértola or the Casa Romana – Núcleo Romano.
Don’t end the trip without visiting one of the best river beaches in the country, the praia Fluvial da Tapada Grande! For a ride on the calm waters of the reservoir, rent a canoe or a pedal boat.
