What documents do you need for driving through Europe?

If you are an EU citizen, you only need your driver’s license, as long as it is valid. If you have a visa for an EU country or your permanent residence in an EU country, you must be able to present a valid driver’s license from the country of your current residence.
For non-EU citizens, the rules are a bit more complicated. Some EU countries accept your home country’s driver’s license, while others require an International Driving Permit (IDP). If you are not from an EU country but plan to travel the continent by car, it is advisable to obtain an IDP just to be safe. Generally, British citizens do not need an IDP. However, those with a paper license or a license issued in Guernsey, Gibraltar, Jersey, or the Isle of Man may need one. Obtaining an IDP is simple and inexpensive, so it’s better to get one and not worry.
To obtain an IDP, you must be at least 18 years old and have a valid driver’s license. You will need to pay a small fee, fill out a form, and submit your application along with two passport photos. You can apply for an IDP at the post office or through automobile clubs and associations. Typically, you will receive your IDP immediately at the counter or within a few days by mail.
Remember that an IDP is not a replacement for your driver’s license, although it is a valid form of identification. Always carry your international driving permit and your ID when driving abroad.
Other documents you need for driving through Europe include your passport or national ID card if you are an EU citizen. Residents of the EU and visa holders should carry their residence permit and visa. Non-EU citizens need a passport that is valid for at least three months beyond the date of departure from the EU and issued within the last ten years. Depending on your country of origin, you may need a visa to enter the EU.
What are the requirements for renting a car in Europe?

To legally rent and drive a car in the EU, you must be at least 18 years old and have a valid driver’s license issued by the country of your residence. Your driver’s license must be valid for at least the duration of your stay.
All rental cars in the EU must have liability insurance. You should always have your car rental documents handy, as they contain all the insurance information in case the authorities wish to see them. If you are driving your rental car from the EU to a non-EU country, such as Switzerland, you must inform your car rental company so they can provide the correct license plates.
