The richness of the natural heritage around Montpellier

Between the nearby Mediterranean and the Camargue nature reserve, there is no shortage of excuses for a walk in the immediate vicinity of Montpellier!

Want to breathe the sea air for an afternoon or a day? The seaside resort of La Grande Motte is less than 30 minutes by car from Montpellier via the A9 motorway; its large blond sandy beaches are popular with vacationers from all over the world. About 8 kilometers from La Grande Motte, continuing on the departmental road 62, Le Grau du Roi is a charming little port surrounded by the waters of the Mediterranean, the Rhône, and the Vidourle ponds. You can, for example, sunbathe on the Espiguette beach.

You don’t mind the seaside, but since you’re taking your car, would you like to take the opportunity to stroll among the natural riches of the Camargue? About a hundred kilometers from Montpellier, via the A9 towards Saintes Maries de la Mer, the Camargue Regional Nature Park awaits you with its bull and flamingo farms; while the Nature Reserve is home to hundreds of bird species. Go to the Marais du Vigueirat, where you will discover more than 2000 plant and animal species.

This weekend, would you like nothing more than to take your car for a stroll in a city of art and history in the region? That’s perfect: Arles, Sète, and Nîmes are located within a 100-kilometer radius around Montpellier, and welcome you for a beautiful getaway.

Classified as a UNESCO World Heritage site, Arles has many monuments, including an ancient theater and a Roman circus, while the city center is lively with numerous festivities and exhibitions. The A9 motorway directly connects the city to Montpellier, over a distance of 80 kilometers.
